Skin Disorders (such as Eczema & Psoriasis)

For many people there are no obvious outward physical signs of stress. Many of our clients present with anxiety and stress related disorders but friends and family wouldn't necessarily know. They may lack confidence in themselves, have low self-esteem or be constantly worrying yet project a confident external appearance, almost as if acting the part of a confident person but not feeling it.

However, if you are someone who has a skin disorder and it flares up at times of stress, on a visible part of the body, then you are more likely to feel self-conscious and may decide to avoid the beach or swimming pools or any situation where that part of the body is visible.

The traditional treatments such as creams and potions aim to address the symptoms but don't get to the cause of the problem or deal with the emotional and psychological aspects of the condition.

At thespencepractice we help you to regain control of your condition in a truly holistic manner by helping you change your thoughts, behaviours and emotions, i.e. the mind and body working together.

Thoughts

The epidermis and nervous systems originate from the Ectoterm and when the embryo fully develops a strong series of connections exist between the two. Therefore, an imbalance within the nervous system may be reflected in your skin. A thought is an electrical impulse in the brain which sends a message through the nervous system, so when you think that you are under threat you activate the body's 'fight or flight' response creating a massive physiological response to provide you with strength and energy. In other words when you feel under pressure, suffering from anxiety or stress your nervous system goes into 'overdrive' and affects various other systems in the body including your skin.

Behaviours

When your skin becomes dry and blotchy it tends to itch and to rectify the discomfort you might scratch it and when it doesn't resolve the itch, you just have to scratch it again and again causing the skin to become even sorer. This can be a habit that is difficult to break because it is often done unconsciously.

Emotions

Unresolved emotional trauma from the past may have been the originating cause of the condition. For example, one of our clients had very severe eczema on the palms of his hands and during a therapy session it was revealed that he had issues around unresolved/suppressed anger from his childhood. Within weeks of helping him to release the anger the healing started and the eczema cleared up. Skin conditions can affect self-esteem especially in the modern age when there is so much emphasis on how we look. You might then feel anxious in social situations or even feel angry and frustrated with the condition thereby 'fanning the flames'.
