Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

If you have a question about any of the therapies offered by thespencepractice which is not answered here, please contact us. We are always happy to provide answers to any queries you may have.

What is hypnosis and what does it feel like?

Hypnosis is a very natural and ordinary state which occurs when you are daydreaming or becoming absorbed in your thoughts. Although it seems like you are oblivious to what's going on around you, you are still in complete control. It often happens when you are driving a car, but when the brake light from the car in front lights up you immediately become very alert and wide awake. In therapy, it is usually achieved by the therapist inducing a deeply relaxed state in you, by the tone and speed of voice and the words used.

Will the hypnotherapist have control of my mind?

You will remain in complete control of your actions at all times. You will never say or do anything whilst in hypnosis that you wouldn't want to say or do when in a normal waking state - nor will you reveal any secret information unless you want to. No-one else can ever have power over your mind unless you wish it. The goal of the therapist is to help you achieve what you want.

Are there any negative side effects from hypnosis?

There are no negative side effects, only beneficial ones, most clients enjoy the mental and physical relaxation they experience.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

As hypnosis is a natural state, virtually everyone can achieve it, except the mentally handicapped and those using mind-altering substances. However some are more readily hypnotisable than others; and some are more willing to enter hypnosis. This willingness will depend upon a number of factors, not least of which will be the strength of your particular need and your trust and confidence in the therapist concerned.

How and why does hypnosis work?

Hypnosis enables communication to take place with your subconscious mind. This is the part of your mind that is responsible for the functioning of your body, your emotions and your behaviours, and storing of information / memories. It has a capacity to learn through repetition so that you can do various activities without thinking about what you are doing. Unfortunately this applies to negative habits and behaviours as well as positive ones.

How can I find out more before committing myself?

If you want to stop smoking or lose weight you can telephone or email us before booking an appointment with your questions or concerns. For any other problems you can book a free initial (no obligation) 30 minute consultation to find out more - this will also enable the therapist to assess whether or not your problem is treatable at thespencepractice.

How many sessions will I need and how much will it cost?

This depends on the type and severity of the problem. It ranges from 2 sessions for a habit like smoking to up to 8 sessions for an obsessive compulsive disorder or depression. Phobias can normally be dealt with within 1 to 2 sessions. The aim of solution-focused therapy is to help you to resolve your problem in the shortest possible time, and you will be given an estimate of the number of sessions required at the free initial consultation. Fees for stopping smoking and weight control will be confirmed when you call us.
